Mawkyrwat, February 09, 2020: The office of the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat issued an Order Under Section 144 CrPC that as per the Action Plan prepared by the NGT Committee for restoration of environment in areas affected by coal mining; individuals, parties, firms and mine owners need to strictly follow and comply the formulated Action Plan to protect life and restore the environment in the district.
The Order also said that in order to protect human and
animals’ death by accidentally falling into coal mine shafts and restore of
water quality in rivers, streams, sources of drinking water and surrounding environment,
it is felt necessary that all coal mine owners should immediately comply the following
items/activities of the Action Plan which includes: -
1.
Erection
of Physical Barriers at periphery of shafts of mines where coal reserve has not
been exhausted
2.
Closure
of shafts of mines where coal reserve has already been exhausted
3.
Closure
of coal mine shafts located in rivers/streams bed by controlled blasting or
refilling of debris/overburden
4.
Covering
of dumps by permanent shed/waterproof tarpaulin
5.
Construction
of garland drains along with acid mine drain storage tanks
6.
Treatment
of Acid Mine Drain collected in storage tanks
7.
Covering
of extracted and assessed coal stocks by permanent shed/waterproof tarpaulin
8.
Covering
of coal by waterproof tarpaulin while its transportation by road.
Smt. C. Kharkongor, IAS, District Magistrate, South
West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat as conferred and empowered by law under
section 144 CrPC also prohibit individuals, parties, firms and mine owners to strictly
follow and comply with the above item/activities in order to protect life and
restore the environment in the District.
In view of the urgent nature of the matter and
ultimate public interest, the order was passed ex-parte and shall come into
force with immediate effect and until further order.
