Introduction
Education is a fundamental human right
and vital to achieving economic growth, increasing income, and sustaining a
healthy society. Education is important in helping to improve lives, break the
cycle of poverty and ensure that all people, particularly women have control
over their destiny.
Despite global progress, 75 million primary school-aged children are still out
of school – over half of whom are girls. There are many reasons children do not
go to school or stay until they are done. They may have to walk a long distance
to get to school, have no food to eat at home or they have to take care of a
younger sister.
Plan is committed to ensuring that all girls are able to realize their full
potential. Children will flourish if they are able to go school, stay there
until they finish and learn the basic skills of literacy, mathematics, life
skills and critical thinking in a supportive setting.

Script
Scene 1
In
the morning, when children were rushing inside the gate of St. Euphrasia
School; Mary, 14-yrs-old girl with a decent but simple poor dress was standing
beside the school gate selling necessary stationary materials to the kids.
With
a cute smile on her face, she attracts parents and students to buy her products
like pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, scales.
Security: Get inside…be quick…go
Mary: Pen, Pencil, Eraser...Rs 5 each...Pen,
Pencil, Eraser, Sharpener...Come come... Pens, Pencil, Eraser, Sharpener, and
Scissor...Please come...come...You want to buy...
Her
dress is worn out and she tied the things with an iron bar (representing that
how society tied the poor or weaker sections in society).
When
Mary was waiting to sell things, the daughter gestured the father asking for
pencil and Mary called her.
Mary: Come come...This is nice for you…you can buy
it.
Little
girl got attracted to Mary and told to her father by pointing at what Mary was
selling.
Shamili’s Father: You are a very good girl right my
child
Shamili (daughter): Daddy…pencil…pencil
Shamili’s Father: Pencil…come…how much is
this..take…
Shamili’s Father: Take this money…say bye… bye
Father
took the daughter to Mary and bought pencil for her, and then Mary with a
smiled face and very sweetly told to that little girl.
Mary: Bye
Then
the father took his daughter to the school. Since he was in hurry he forgot to
take the change from Mary. After dropping his daughter, Mary saw the man and
ran towards him to return the change.
Mary: Sir…Sir...You forgot to take the change…Here
it is…
Shamili’s Father: Yes what happen? Oh! Really...I
didn’t take the change...
Mary
returns the Rs.40/- to him. The father in gratitude gave Mary Rs.10/- for her
honesty.
Shamili’s Father: Forgot the change! You are so
honest…Take this Rs.10/- for you…
Mary: No…No…No…I don’t want…Thank you so much sir…
Shamili’s Father: Take…take..
Shamili’s Father: Okay then…Bye…
After
returning the change to the father, Mary went to different school to sell the
stationary things.
She
joyfully walked towards the fruit seller (Tribute to renowned Indian Filmmaker
Satyajit Ray in the movie ‘Pather
Panchali’: Durga walking towards her house)
Mary
passed by different schools and noticed students entering St. Joseph’s Boy’s
High School, St. Joseph’s PU College.
Mary
went to St. Joseph’s High School and was attracting children to buy her things.
Mary: Stationary items...stationary items...come

In
one of the schools, parents had come along with their kids to drop them to the
school. As they were entering, they noticed Mary selling the stationary things.
A mother along with her child came to buy pencil from Mary.
Mother: Come come...
Holding
her son’s hand and asked her son.
Mother: Do you want this?
Her
son slightly nodded his head and looking at her son, she asked Mary about the
price
Mother: How much is this?
Mary
politely replied to her.
Mary: Rs. 5
Mother
bought pencil for her son and gave the money by thanking Mary.
Mother: Take it...Thank you...
Another
parent had come to drop his son and his son got attracted and bought some
stationary from Mary.
Parent: This is so nice right…take this..take this
money…come now let us go

Then
Mary saw the students buying things near St. Agnes’ School.
Scene 2
Mary
notices that the children were standing in assembly so she peeps in through the

School Security: Go… Don’t stand here... Go...
But
her curiosity didn’t let her to go from that place till she asked a question to
the school security.
Mary: Uncle what is going on inside?
School Security: Prayer ma...
With
a little disappointment for not watching them pray till they finish, she had to
leave from there with her things.
Scene 3
Mary
walked towards different school. Suddenly she noticed a blind man trying to
cross the road and thinks for a while (Why is he standing there...I think he
cannot see...Oh! I will go and help him). Mary moved with pity and runs to help
him.
Mary: Why is that person standing there…I think he
cannot see… let me go and help him…
Mary: Uncle where do you want to go?
Blind man: I want to cross the road...but I cannot
cross because I can hear so many vehicles passing by…
Mary: Come uncle…I will help you...
She

Mary
reaches St. Euphrasia School and waits for the students to come out for their class
to get over. As she waits she thinks of taking rest for a while
Mary: Classes are not over, what to do now...I am feeling
so tired...let me go to that corner and sleep for a while, she gets tired and
sleeps.
Mary
dreams that she is a very active student. Students and teachers like her. She
participates in different activities in the school and tries to be the best in
whatever she does. Her dream is interrupted with the ringing of the school
bell.
Paul (Teacher): So my dear today we will learn

Mary participating in different activities in the
school…she tries giving her best. The bell rang and Mary woke up from her
sleep.
Scene 4
When
the bells rang and classes got over, Mary as usual continued selling her
things. As she was selling her things, she noticed a girl dropping her
instrument box. She went to the spot and pick up the box and tried to return
the box. She shouted.
Mary: Hello hello…you dropped your instrument
box...
The
mother and the girl didn’t pay attention and they just went ahead. The girl
kept the instrument box in her box. As she continued selling her things and she
found few girls throwing sheets of paper near the school gate. Mary bends down
to pick those thrown papers and started arranging them properly. Then she sat
in one corner and started reading those papers which she had picked up, and
trying to read and learn.
Mary: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J....
The
night falls and there is a jump cut to the next day.
Scene 5
The
next day, Mary as usual reached early to sell things in the school. She was
quite familiar with the children now. When she saw the girl who dropped the
instrument box and said
Mary: Hey…I think you dropped your instrument box
yesterday... Here it is please take it...
The
girl and his mother were so delighted to see the missing instrument box
returned to them by Mary. The girl quickly opened the box and found everything
inside as it was. With a smile on her face she showed it to her mother and girl
thanked Mary for her kind help.
Medsha: Thank you so much...
The
girl’s mother took out some money and wanted to give it to this girl, but Mary
refused.
Medsha Mother: I appreciate your honesty...Please
take this money...Take it...it’s for you...take it...Okay
Mary
again tried to peep inside but the security chased her away.
School Security: Go go...Don’t look here...Go go to
your home...Go
Since
she could not go inside the gate, she began pondering what to do next.
Mary: Now where shall I go...
Scene 6
As
she was thinking what to do next, Mary was feeling hungry and was looking for
something to eat.
Mary: I am so hungry...Now need to have
something...
Suddenly
Mary saw fruit wheel stall standing there and selling the different types of
fruits. Since she was hungry, she decided to go and buy something from the
fruit seller. She joyfully walked towards the fruit seller (Tribute to renowned
Indian Filmmaker Satyajit Ray in the movie ‘Pather Panchali’: Durga walking towards her house)
Mary: Can you give me a banana to eat?
Fruit seller: Do you have money?
She
showed her the note of Rs.10/-. Mary asked the fruit seller.
Mary: How much is it?
And
fruit seller replied to her.
Fruit seller: How much do you want?
She
gave her a bunch of banana and asking for Rs.20/- which was kept next to her
money box. But Mary stopped her for giving more.
Fruit seller: Give Rs. 20/-…
Mary: Take...
Fruit seller was
giving her a bunch of banana but Mary refused and asked
Mary: No…. no… no...Please give me just one
banana...
Fruit seller: Take...Give me change?
With
a smile Mary took the banana from her and fruit seller asked her to give only
some amount for one banana.
Fruit seller: Rs. 5 only...
Mary
took out the money from her money box, which she had earned since morning. With
a smile, she said to her.
Mary: Thank you aunty...
Mary
replied back to her with a smile. Mary ate the fruit.
Scene 7
After
having a banana, she goes to the school security and asks for drinking water
since she was thirsty.
Mary: Uncle...I want some water to drink...give me
water
Security
asked her to wait outside the gate.
School Security: Water...Okay wait...
While
giving water school security said
School Security: Here you are...
Then
Mary thanked him with a smile.
Mary: Thank you uncle...
After
drinking water Mary noticed a lady teacher got down from her car and parked her
car near the gate. Mary saw the lady teacher getting down from the car and saw
her closing the car door. But since Mary was busy initially didn’t notice the
keys were fallen down near the car door. After few moments she saw the keys
below the car. As the teacher rushed inside the school campus, Mary runs to that
spot, picks up that bunch of keys and in hurry wanted to give back these keys
to that teacher. But as Mary ran towards the school gate, security guard as
usual stopped her. But she requested him to let her in and explained to him the
situation.
Mary: Uncle...the teacher has dropped this key...I
need to give it to her...
Security,
as restricted in his duties, said to her.
School Security: Wait wait wait...
The
school Headmistress (sister) was walking in the school corridors to check
whether all students are inside their class room or not. Suddenly she noticed
Mary determined to enter inside the school campus. When she noticed the
security and a little girl was arguing with each other. She called out the
security person, and the security rushed towards the headmistress. Meanwhile
Mary was shouting
Sister: Security…
School Security: Yes sister...
Mary: Sister…sister…sister…sister…
With
anticipation, she spoke.
Sister: Please let that little girl inside...
Respecting
the order, security guard lets that little girl inside.
School Security: You can go inside...
With
her smiling face, she said to the security guard.
Mary: Thank you security uncle...
She
rushed inside to inform about the keys.
Mary: Sister…sister
Sister
of that school looks at her astonishingly.
Sister: What happened my dear girl? Go home...
Mary
in hurry informed her.
Mary: Sister…sister… one teacher from your school
dropped this car key. So can you please return it to her.
With a smiling
face, sister said to her.
Sister: You are a very good girl.
Immediately
sister questioned her.
Sister: What is your name?
Mary happily
replied to her question.
Mary: Mary
Scene 8
With
excitement and responsibility, Mary enters the school gate and with happiness
meets one the sisters there. With a smile on Mary’s face, Mary informs the
sister. Listening to her cute voice and very happy with her helpful nature,
sister asked her.
Mary: Sister! Take these keys and please give to
the teacher...
Sister
asked a question quickly.
Sister: And why you didn’t hand over to her
immediately?
Mary
immediately replied to her question.
Mary: That is because, she was in hurry I
guess...So I couldn’t reach her and the security uncle stopped me entering
inside...He thought that I will peep inside again to watch children play...
Sister
was taken aback by her gesture.
Sister: Thank you so much for the kind gesture of
yours...I will return the key to the teacher...
Mary
was so obliged with sister’s gesture that she couldn’t stop herself from giving
her a gift.
Mary: Sister…I have some gift for you.
Taking
something from her stationary box, she takes a pen and gives to sister.
Mary: When I will become something in life...I will
give you a foreign pen for sure...
Looking
at Mary’s confident, sister smiles and replies to her
Sister: Thank you so much for this gift...I don’t
want to take it, but will take it because this will remind me of you...
Sister
took it with great love and Mary told her desire of becoming something in life.
Mary: Sister...I want to go to school, but I cannot
because I am the bread earner of the family...
Looking
at Mary’s attitude, sister took out some sweets from her pocket and offered to
Mary.
Sister: Here is something for you my child... I
will see what I could do for you...As for now you go home and help your
parents...
Mary: Thank you sister…
Mary
left the place and as usual with her cheerful face replied to the security
Mary: Thank you security uncle…
Security
in concern told Mary.
School Security: No go home...
When
she was out of the gate she pondered for a while and thought (Where should I go
now...)
Scene 9
Mary: Hmmm…what should I do now?...I think I should
go to different school to sell things…
She
kept her things in a plastic bag, took them along and Mary went to different
school. (Tribute to renowned Indian Filmmaker Satyajit Ray in the movie ‘Pather Panchali’: Durga walking towards
her house).
Mary
reached St. Joseph’s Boys School, Museum road and she saw children coming out
of the school with parents. Mary began to sell the things.
Mary: Stationary items...stationary items...Please
come...come...Pencil, Pen, Sharpener, Eraser...come come come...
Towards
the end one family came to pick their child and saw this girl, who was selling
stationary things.
Mary: Aunty will you like to buy something? What do
you want? Pen, Pencil, Eraser...take which one you want...Buy something na
please...
They
replied to her and said.
Parent: Give us pencil.
They
bought this pencil and gave it to their child. Mary thanked them.
Mary: Thank you aunty...
They
asked her.
Parent: I see you every time here...Where do you
live and do you study?
Mary
answered to their question without any hesitation and conversation continued
for few minutes between them.
Mary: Yes, I am here every day to earn my living
and support my family...
Parent: Where do you live?
Mary: Hmm… I feel shy to tell...but still I will
tell you...
“Yes
I have my parents and I live with them along with my younger brother in
Viveknagar. We have a small house but I thank God at least we have a house. My
father is unemployed and always beats my mother for no reason after drinking.
Every day when I reach home he would snatch the money from me and would go out
and buy alcohol. Even if I want to study and read from the pages which I
collected, he would snatch and push at me. My mom work as poauramikas and
sweeps the footpaths and do all menial work. But we cannot save money because
my dad snatches all money and spend for drinking. My brother is too small and
he is at home. But I go to different schools to sell these stationary things to
support the family”.
Scene 10
Mary reached home in the night after her work, while
her father was quarrelling with her mother. As soon as he saw Mary, the father
got up and snatched the Plastic bag where she kept her things to sell. He turns
the bag upside down in search for money. Mary tell her father not to do it.
Mary’s Father: huh…huh…what are you doing there… who
will eat this food and I don’t have money for my drinks…give me some
money…where has all my money gone… (he looks at his son and said) Let me get money for
my drinks then I will buy some more toys for you (he saw Mary coming in
and he said) Oh…my
Lovely daughter did you bring some money for me
Mary: Please daddy...Please don’t take it...
Mary’s
Father: hmmm…I got some money here let me go and get some drinks…
Once he gets the money, he leaves the house to buy
alcohol. This was the regular event that happens in Mary’s life. Mary tells her
mother how father takes away the money that she earns.
Mary: Mummy...what to do now...Daddy has taken all
the money...
So Mary kept aside certain amount of money wrapped
in a plastic. Once the father is out she takes the money and hands it over to
her mother.
Mary: Mummy! Take this money... I kept separately
because I know daddy will snatch the money from me every day.
Mother
smiles at her and says few words about their daily life.
Mother: Thank you so much Mary...This is how we
live out life...
In
the night, sitting in one corner of the house Mary helps her mother in washing
utensils. After helping her mother, Mary takes out the papers (she picked up
the thrown papers near the school gate) from her bag and starts reading them.
Mary: A...B...
P...E...A...R...L
Mary’s
Father: What is this huh…what is this… you go…do this work…give me food
After
sometime, father enters the home, takes the papers from Mary, and orders for
food. Mother hurries to give food to her husband.
Mary
tells this to the parents who asked Mary about her livelihood and she tells
this while standing in front of the parent. Mary continues.
Mary: This is how I live my life every day... I
wish I could go to school someday...
The
boy’s mother got touched by her story and slight tears started rolling down
from their cheeks.
Parent: So sad... I will try to help you...
Parent
gives some money to Mary, but Mary refuses, but keeping her mother in mind she
accepts the money from them. Parent shakes hand with her and wishes her goodnight
and even orders her to do the needful.
Parent: Here…Take this money…Please don’t give this
money to daddy but give to mummy
Mary
obeys the boy’s mother’s words and says with a smile.
Mary: I don’t want money...Thank you aunty...its
okay...goodnight aunty...
Scene 11
Mary
as usual reaches the school before all the children to sell her things. When
all the children are inside the class she notices a politician coming by bike.
Just a few minutes later, she noticed the politician talking busily over the
phone, and takes out a handkerchief from his pocket. Suddenly his slim leather
wallet falls down on the road. The wallet contains all ATM cards, Money etc. The
man then suddenly touched his pockets and found that his purse was not there.
He began to search again in his pockets. When he saw the girl was holding the
purse he slapped her.
Politician: Why did you steal my purse?
Mary
was trembling and begs pardon.
Mary: Uncle I am not stealing... You just dropped
your purse and so I picked up to hand over to you...
Man
couldn’t believe her and angrily spoke to her.
Politician: You wretched poor… don’t you know who I
am?
He
paused for few seconds, and then he continued.
Politician: I am the boss, the MLA of this area…
Mary
apologises him.
Mary: Sorry uncle…I am really sorry…
But
he angrily spoke to her.
Politician: What! Sorry...people like you bring bad
name to me and our constitution…
He
continued speaking.
Politician: You don’t deserve to have the little
money…that you have…
He
spoke rude words to her and began cursing her but Mary begs him.
Mary: Sir…sir...my family...my family...
He
continued by speaking rude words to her and began cursing her
Politician: You thief? Your place is jail only…I
will call the police...Wait...
Mary
in tears, convincing him.
Mary: Please sir let me go....I am not stealing.
Please…please...my family...please let me go...please...
But
with anger on that person’s face, he immediately holds her hand tightly and
starts arguing with her thinking that she was a thief. The politician called
the police. The police arrived in few minutes and they took Mary away with all
her belongings. No one supported her and believed in her.
Scene 12
After
a while, police arrived on the spot. When he saw the girl was holding the purse
he slapped her.
Police: What happened sir?
Politician
began abusing Mary as a thief
Politician: Take this thief, this wretched poor,
this swine, this bitched; beat her, give her a good lesson and lock her in the
jail…Police
Mary
with tears rolling on her face and she tries to convince them.
Mary: Please sir… please forgive me…
But
the man couldn’t hear a single apology word from her and spoke to her rudely.
Politician: Get lost from my sight, you stray dogs
that eat up our economy…
Respecting
the words of the man, police obeyed his words and replied.
Police: Okay sir…
Police
woman pulling her inside the car and Mary in tears went with them.
The
movie ends with the bars and road ahead.
This
is the way people think about a girl living in poverty. Society is very cruel
and misunderstands poor people so easily; they have this perception towards
poorer society. Like this little girl who had courage to return the belongings
of an individual, determination to do something in life, like educating people
as she says. She understands this world and people within it. She knows the
outside world so much that she motivates people and pass this message of hope,
strength within oneself and confident that she puts on sister’s mind wins her
not through the words but through emotions and gesture in a way. This little
girl not only teach us all this qualities but also humanity that matters a lot.

Summary
In the movie, Mary
is a sweet and helpful girl. We see how in each different situation Mary help
people by crossing the road (like she did helping blind man cross the road),
returning the change to the father, and giving back the valet of a powerful
man, politician. She is very humble and a truthful human being. She is, what
she is and what she is suppose to be by the grace of God.
Mary
wishes to study and pursue a career to become something in life and be an
independent girl, who can stand on her own feet and help her family especially
her mother financially. She has desire to study like other children in the
school, play like them, read and learn new things like them. She survives by
eating one fruit in a day as a meal in the afternoon. She struggles a lot to
survive and take care of unemployed father, mother, and a younger brother who
stays at home all the time.
Girl like Mary
suffer not only poverty level of their lives, but inhuman of people’s
behaviour. We can see how Mary tries to earn as much as possible from her end
to run her family and their livelihood. But society treats her badly, by
putting her into trouble of jailing her for no reason. She has rights to live
on her own and no one has the rights to take her away from her. She wears the
same dress all the time, and goes to different school to sell. You must be
wondering why she only goes to schools and not colleges, this is because she
knows that if she has to study and become something in life, it will all begin
with schooling.
Talking about a
girl like Mary, people won’t get tired instead they will love talking to such a
nice girl. We even see how Mary and sister’s conversation turn out to be so
emotional and gesture-full. Mary does what is right and doesn’t support the
wrong things and bad people. She is very innocent who doesn’t know that hoe
cruel this world is for her and how it will be on her in future. Looking at
her, we are sure every person would like to be like her, but we have law and
order, which sometimes behave like a hell master monitoring an angel on the
earth.
