Mawkyrwat, February 25, 2021: The office of the District Planning Officer, South West Khasi Hills District (SWKHD), Mawkyrwat along with the State Council of Science Technology & Environment, Meghalaya today organised the National Science Day (28 February) Celebration, 2021 which was held at Multipurpose Hall DC’s Office, Mawkyrwat on the theme “Future of STI-Impact on Education, Skills and works”.
While welcoming the gathering Shri. W. Biam, MCS, District Planning Officer, SWKHD, Mawkyrwat said that education in olden days is to study books where route memory was stressed upon but as time goes on education is now going side by side with science and technology. He added that the aim of the celebration is to create awareness to students about the importance of science and technology, to engage young students with exciting materials, to motivate students to use innovative and creative ideas in their studies and quest for knowledge and in turn to improve our human resources for the growth and development of our society at large.
Speaking on the theme “Future of STI-Impact on Education, Skills and works”, Shri. R. Muttyent, Soil and Water Conservation Overseer explained the concept of science, technology, innovation and added that science gives us knowledge where we apply in technology to create innovative ideas and introduce new things in society. He opined that science and technology have tremendous impact on education whereby the educational institutions have adopted new methods of teachings, new educational equipment like replacing of blackboard with whiteboard or smart classrooms and providing students with better technology to learn. He further said that learning becomes deeper, project work simpler, and to practice becomes easier. He also said that during pandemic of COVID-19 science and technology through smart phones and other gadgets have become an important tool in educating students in an online mode. In the area of sports science and technology plays pivotal role to evaluate the mistakes or error in the game and to correct them immediately or to get newer ideas to improve their skills, he added. Shri Muttyent also said that Science and technology plays an important role in our work, it saves time and money and help us complete our work in a more efficient manner. He concluded urging students to use science and technology wisely and not to be addicted or enslaved by it.
Shri O.L Passah,
Superintendent of Fisheries said that through the celebration of National
Science Day, the government is giving a platform to students to showcase their
talents and helps us come up with creative ideas and innovative inventions. He said,
“science and technology is to help bringing a sustainable development, in the emergence
of disruptive and powerful technologies to help us in our lives, to reduce, in
sharpening skills for better performance in our work, to come up with eco
friendly ideas to reduce carbon emission and concentration of carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere, and to learn more in dept about a concept or idea using videos,
animations and information provided by modern technology. He also spoke about
virtual reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their impact on our
lives by adding that Mathematicians and physicist of today have more knowledge
than Newton because of availability of information through science and
technology. He concluded saying that we need to weight the pros and cons of
science and technology and give equal time to education, family and social life
and never to be addicted to the gadgets we possess.
In the programme which was chaired by Kum I. Nongkhlaw, Research Officer, there was also a distribution of certificates to the participating schools of the district.
