Shillong, August 10, 2021: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma has condemned the perpetrators of the IED blast at Laitumkhrah Market that occurred at around 1:30pm on Tuesday and assured that “Those, who are a threat to peace will be punished.”
In the Low-intensity IED
blast 2 persons were injured and properties were damage. The injured persons
were immediately rushed to Nazareth Hospital Shillong for treatment. The
Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a banned militant outfit in
Meghalaya, has claimed responsibility the blast.
The local MLA Ampareen
Lyngdoh rushed to the spot to assess the situation and said that people were panic
since it was a big blast and condemned the act.
The HNLC who claimed
responsibility of the blast through its General secretary cum Publicity
secretary, Sainkupar Nongtraw uploaded a post in facebook slated as “Once again
HNLC has taken responsibility for the IED blast at Laitumkhrah.” In the press statement the HNLC condemned the
Meghalaya High Court Order that considered unlawful for total shutdown as a sign
of protest, they challenged the Police Department that since they considered cowardly
act during the blast at Khliehriat Police Reserve since it was during the night,
they proved them wrong by the blast at Laitumkhrah Market that took place
during the wee hour. The banned outfit also called for a 24 hours total shutdown
from 6.00 PM of the 14th August to 6.00 PM of 15th
August, 2021 as a sign of protest against the Indian Government.
Reacting to the role of
HNLC behind the attack Conrad Sangma said that the government is clear towards
the HNLC “if they want to sit for talks they must surrender first”. Security
has been beefed up in Shillong, bomb squad, Crime Scene Unit and Dog Squad were
sent to the spot for a collection of evidence.
