September 05, 2020: Amidst the global pandemic the 58th
Teacher’s Day Celebration at South West Khasi Hills District (SWKHD) organised
by the office of the District School Education Officer (DSEO), SWKHD, Mawkyrwat
was a meaningful and a memorable one wherein Shri. Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar,
MLA, Mawkyrwat Constituency was the Chief Guest while Kum. Isawanda Laloo, IAS,
Deputy Commissioner South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat was the Guest of
Honour in a programme held at Multipurpose Hall, DC Complex Mawkyrwat.
Recognising the sacrificial efforts of teachers in
educating children for a better society, the government gave State Award, 2020
to Shri. Basstanshon Sanglyne, BSc., B.Ed., M.A., Assitant Teacher, Maharam
Govt. Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat. The South West Khasi Hills District
Award, 2020 was given to Shri. Valentine Thyrniang, B.A., B.Ed., Assistant
Teacher, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Rangblang at Secondary Level, Smti. Plantinora Nongsiej, P.U (Arts),
Assistant Teacher, Jakrem Presbyterian Higher Secondary School at Upper Primary
Level and Shri. Justine Kharsyiemlieh, P.U, Head Teacher cum Secretary,
Nongmyllam Govt. L.P School, Nongmyllam at Lower Primary Level. The best
Scoutmaster of the District was awarded to Mr. Batkupar Khardewsaw, M.Sc. Lab
Asstt. Cum Scout Master, Maharam Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Mawkyrwat while the
best Guide Captain was awarded to Sr. Maria Cresencia Swer, M.A., B.Ed., Headmistress
cum Group Leader of Scout & Guide, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School,
Rangblang.
Speaking
as the Chief Guest Shri. Renikton congratulated the awardees for giving their
best in imparting knowledge to students and lauded the DSEO for organising Teachers
Day amidst the global pandemic to acknowledge the services rendered by
teachers. He also thank Kum. Isawanda Laloo for her services to the District
and said, ‘though you leave Mawkyrwat please continue to serve Mawkyrwat, leave
Mawkyrwat physically but let your heart remain in our district”. He
added that the government respect the profound contribution of teachers to
society and added that we could never pay their selfless services. He expressed
his gratitude to all teachers and said that prayed that they may continue to
serve with good spirit. He urged teachers to adept with the current situation
and updates themselves with the changing world so that they can impart novel
ideas to children. Despite the infrastructural, network and other hardships that
teachers encounter daily he noted that some teachers have find ways and means
to guide their children through online classes, whatsup and other methods
because they believed in the mantra of ‘something is better than nothing at
all’. He
informed the gathering that the government will permit opening of schools for
higher classes while complying all protocols issued by the government.
Therefore, he appealed teachers and communities to take responsibility in
shaping and moulding the children. He urged teachers that they should live up
to the expectation of society as formators and leaders and respect the
aspiration, faith and trust of society so that society and children will
continue to respect them.
Speaking as the
guest of Honour, Kum. Isawanda Laloo said that it was an honour to be part of
the celebration and it gives us hope to have such programme to
recognize the effort of teachers. She added due to Covid-19, this year has been
a difficult year not only for government, economy, health sector, social life
but also in education. She noted that online classes in the District are
difficult to conduct because of the network issues. She acknowledged the
services of teachers and said, “Teachers do not shy away with responsible
allotted to them and they have played a key role in spreading awareness to
people regarding Covid-19 and in fighting against it”. She added that Teachers are
concerned about the welfare of students and performed their duty to the best of
their abilities to form the young minds of our nation. She further said,
“Teachers are dealing with living files” who will play vital role in society.
Therefore, she urged them to take up their profession seriously and encouraged
them to give equal importance on extra-curricular activities as well as the district
have huge potential in sports. While congratulating the awardees she said that
their long years of services are not in vain and today the government is
recognising their efforts and dedicated services.
It is to be noted that the Teacher’s
Day celebration in remembering the Birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan,
the second president of India was chaired by Shri. J. Thyrniang I/c DSEO,
SWKHD, Mawkyrwat while the vote of thanks was delivered by Smti. Riba Marngar.
